Understanding Diode Laser Limitations

Diode lasers, such as the Glowforge Aura  or Spark, have some limitations compared to more powerful CO2 lasers. Here’s what you need to know:

• Cutting Limitations: Diode lasers cannot cut through clear, white, and most transparent colors. Think of it like a car in the sun: darker colors heat up faster, making them easier to cut with a diode laser. Black is the easiest color to cut.
• Material Restrictions: Certain acrylic materials, like mirror acrylic and patterns with clear cores, are not suitable for diode cutting. Additionally, most glitter acrylic sheets, which typically have clear bases, will also not be cuttable on diode lasers.

Machine Power Considerations

The Glowforge Aura is a 5-watt laser, so while some materials may not cut well on this machine, users with higher-wattage diode lasers may achieve better results. If you have a stronger machine, you may be able to cut through materials we couldn’t cut with our Glowforge Aura.

Testing and Samples

If we haven’t tested a product yet or if it’s not listed as diode-friendly, we recommend testing a 2"x2" sample first. Sample pieces are available for purchase on each product page, ensuring that you can verify compatibility before committing to larger sheets.
